about

"Peace" is a poem by Bacchlides, 5th century BC Greek lyric poet, nephew of Simonides, contemporary of Pindar, writer of dithyrambs.

lyrics

PEACE

Peace gives birth in mortals to great-hearted wealth.
Peace brings forth flowers of honey-tongued song.
Peace brings to the gods at the intricate altar
burning slices of the thighs of long-haired sheep.
Peace makes youths revel in gymnastics
and dance to the song of the flute.

And the spider builds his web in the handle of an iron shield.
And the two-edged sword and the spear
and the spearhead stand subdued.
And the brass war trumpet makes no sound.
And sleep which sweetens the mind and warms the heart
is not ripped from the eyelids at dawn.
And lovely drinking parties fill the streets.
And children's songs of praise rise up like flames.
