about

Corinna of Tanagra, poet of the 5th century BCE (though some scholars date her work 200 years later), sang of the Olympian gods, heroic ancestors, and Boeotian gods who were also local rivers and mountains. Only fragments of her work survive, often stray lines and words preserved in grammar books or on shreds of papyrus. Our versions include songs built out of disconnected phrases:

Enjoying the wind, honeyed voice,
Song surging, like the wide Euripus

Also narratives: how the nine daughters of the river god Asopus disappeared, a contest between two singing mountains, Corinna reproaching herself for laziness and a rival poet for presumption. Unlike the verse of Sappho or Alcaeus, there is little use of the first person--no unique authorial personality emerges from her songs. But there are certainly glimmerings of a distinct sensibility: ancient stories filtered through love for local landscapes and joy in singing as a highlight of community life.
